Tech giant Microsoft announces massive layoffs
It’s a new year and it looks like the tech industry is already shaking things up! The latest tech giant to make some changes is none other than Microsoft, who announced that they will be cutting 10,000 jobs globally. This move will affect up to 5% of its workforce and cost the business $1.2bn in severance and reorganization costs.
But before you start panicking, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella assures us that this move is not a reflection of the company’s overall performance. In fact, Nadella says that customer spending grew during the COVID-19 pandemic, but now more people are choosing to “exercise caution.” So, while some areas of the company may be downsizing, others will continue to grow and hire in key areas.
And why is this happening? Well, Nadella explains that many parts of the world are currently in recession or anticipating one. But, on the flip side, the next major wave of computing is being born, with advances in AI. And, speaking of AI, it looks like Microsoft may be making a big move in this field as well. Rumor has it that the company is considering a multi-billion-dollar investment in artificial intelligence company OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer).
This move by Microsoft is not surprising, as we have seen similar actions from other tech giants in recent weeks. The pandemic brought on a boom time for the tech industry, with people stuck at home and looking for digital entertainment and devices to keep them occupied. But now that things are slowly returning to normal, these companies are looking to tighten their belts.
But don’t worry, this doesn’t mean the tech sector is stagnating. In fact, reports suggest that Microsoft’s investment in OpenAI’s ChatGPT could potentially be the future of search. And let’s not forget the company’s proposed acquisition of the games giant Activision Blizzard, which would bring a whole new portfolio of high-profile gaming titles under its wing.
So, while this news may not be great for the thousands of Microsoft employees facing redundancy in the early days of 2023, the tech industry is still moving forward and there is still demand for job hunters with the right skills, particularly engineers experienced in AI and data science. So, let’s keep our heads held high and look forward to what the future holds for the tech industry!
